Financial Rights regularly hosts training and information sessions. Our training is designed primarily for financial counsellors, community lawyers or other caseworkers. We aim to deliver relevant information about how to use the online tools on our website and build deeper knowledge of credit, debt and insurance laws, so that these caseworkers are able to support their current and future clients. We also cover how best to make appropriate and timely referrals to Financial Rights. We engage with state and territory Financial Counsellors Associations to deliver training on topics of interest for financial counsellors around Australia.
Our training covers insurance topics such as bushfire and flood insurance, common insurance claims issues, and motor vehicle accidents and insurance. We have offered credit and debt sessions on the latest developments in credit reporting, buy now pay later, debt collection and options for those experiencing mortgage stress. To a wider audience we have provided information about the work of the National Debt Helpline and financial counsellors.
The Mob Strong Debt Help team have delivered training about the progression of campaigns such as the Save Sorry Business and the Centrepay reforms. The team has developed a cultural communications presentation ‘yarning with mob about money’ which is regularly presented. They also meet with Aboriginal community network groups and welcome the opportunity to yarn about their service.
Please contact the Community Legal Education Officer if your organisation would like to arrange a training session or would simply like to learn more about the services that Financial Rights Legal Centre offers. The online world ensures that we can visit you wherever you are in NSW or Australia to deliver a topic within our area of expertise.
Sandy watched one of our recorded training sessions
The Credit Reporting video is great. I watched it yesterday and then had a client where I used some of the information to work on our next strategy with their credit cards. Definitely worth a reminder if you have not watched it. And so convenient to watch when it suited me.
I sent it to some colleagues, as well as my Diploma student group, and recommended they watch it. 30 minutes is a good length for a training video – keep them coming!
Our CLE Impact 2025
Financial Rights had another busy year from July 2024 to June 2025, in which we delivered 34 CLE training sessions for professional caseworkers, mostly solicitors and financial counsellors. These sessions were delivered predominantly online to reach across NSW and on occasion around Australia.
Our staff went to two community events in Sydney to publicise our work to members of the general public and students. We spoke at three conferences and covered insurance topics from extreme weather to motor vehicle accidents; and credit and debt topics such as how to make a regulator complaint, credit reporting, buy now pay later and bankruptcy.
