Maria’s Story: Financial abuse through insurance
When Maria separated from her financially abusive husband, Richard, she and the children remained in the family home. An accidental fire at the home left Maria and the children homeless. Richard claimed for repairs under the insurance policy, which was in his sole name, but refused to claim the temporary accommodation benefit. The insurer refused to allow Maria to claim, as the policy was not in her name. Financial Rights made urgent complaints to the insurer and the Australian Financial Complaints Authority and Maria was quickly able to access the benefit and move to suitable accommodation.
